Critical Raw Material Closed Loop Recovery Project

The project started in Italy, Germany, UK and Turkey where the call for “Critical Raw Material Closed Loop Recovery” tenders is promoted by the European Recycling Platform.

In Italy, Germany, the UK and Turkey the ”Critical Raw Material Closed Loop Recovery” has started. The project is promoted by the European Recycling Platform which is the lead compliance scheme in Europe in the management of WEEE and the WBA, in collaboration with WRAP, EARN, the Wuppertal Institute, KTN. The project was aided by the contribution of the Life European investment fund that encourages the development of innovative methodologies for collecting and processing electronic waste to improve the “noble” metal recovery rate.

The Critical Raw Material Closed Loop Recovery project has an ambitious goal – a 5% increase in the recovery of “precious” components such as graphite, cobalt, antimony, tantalum, rare earth metals, silver, gold and platinum by 2020.

This goal is ambitious compared to the status-quo in EU countries where 9.9M tons of WEEE is generated annually and only 30% is properly treated. The recovery percentage of precious and rare materials does not exceed 1%.

Through the call for tender, is open to individuals and consortia, the Critical Raw Material Closed Loop Recoveryproject aims to promote the presentation of innovative projects that contain precise and feasible details of changes to be made to the organisation of the collection and recycling of WEEE. It also wants to see process innovations which could contribute in making the recovery of valuable secondary raw materials more productive and sustainable.

The deadline for submission of projects is April 7, 2016. All information relating to admission criteria and the documents’ technical specifications are available on the project’s website.
